Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. Celebrates Success of “Walmart Free Newark” Campaign

The “Walmart Free Newark” campaign was a tremendous success of our coalition and the Newark community. Working together with small business, faith, labor, student, women, civil rights, and community groups, we not only stopped Walmart from opening a store in Newark, but also paved the way for a family-friendly ShopRite to open in the city.

Voter Registration Van is on The Move

Library_Voter_Registration_1.JPGWorking Families United for New Jersey, Inc. conducted two successful voter registration drives this week. The van’s first stop this week was the Trenton Library on April 4, 2013, where we were greeted with an overwhelming response. Libraries are a community’s beacon of knowledge and opportunity, and our voter registration team provided a natural complement as we provided an education on critical state issues such as this year’s minimum wage ballot question and the opportunity to register to vote and make our voices heard.

For example, this year’s ballot will allow voters to directly authorize an increase in our state’s minimum wage that helps hardworking low wage families make ends meet, lifts the standard of living for all working families, and restores a ladder of economic opportunity in all of New Jersey’s communities.

Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. Applauds Assembly Passage of Early Voting Legislation

Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. recognizes the importance of early voting in New Jersey and expanding opportunities for all New Jerseyans to participate in our democratic process. We should make every effort to ensure that those eligible to vote can do so, including people working two or more jobs, single parents taking care of their children, residents who fall ill, senior citizens who may have limited access to transportation, and students balancing school responsibilities and perhaps a part-time job. And in the case of a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy, early voting would go a long way to ensuring an organized and accurate voting process.
