Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. is pleased to inform our coalition partners that the Assembly plans to advance a bill (A-2354) in September which would establish a statewide earned sick days law for all workers in New Jersey.

This past Monday, Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. kicked off a statewide grassroots campaign in support of a New Jersey earned sick days, and by week’s end the press has certainly picked up on the message. In addition to the coverage we received throughout the week, our coalition was invited to appear on News 12 New Jersey’s “Power & Politics” program to discuss what an earned sick days policy would mean to our state.

The segment, featuring host Luke Margolis and WFUNJ Executive Director Edward Correa will air this weekend at the following times, so be sure to tune in.

Our coalition is currently engaged in several high stakes campaigns to bring the issues that New Jersey’s working families care about to the forefront of our public policy discussion. Two recent examples of our efforts include the launch of our coalition’s statewide earned sick days campaign and a press conference to oppose the unprecedented surge in corporate welfare and the need for businesses to pay their fair share in solving our state’s budget crisis. The non-partisan grassroots coalition, Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc., joined today with dozens of coalition partners and the prime sponsors of earned sick days legislation, Senator Loretta Weinberg and Assemblywoman Pam Lampitt, to launch a statewide campaign to enact an earned sick days law in New Jersey. Our coalition was successful in leading grassroots education efforts to raise the state’s minimum wage last year, and is prepared to once again rally the support of over 256 community partners to make sure workers do not have to risk losing pay or their jobs just because they get sick.

Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. was proud to partner over the weekend with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) which organized a comprehensive citizenship clinic on Saturday, May 17th at the Rutgers School of Law in Newark, providing no-cost services to individuals and families applying for U.S. citizenship. The event provided an opportunity for at least 50 people to receive guidance and assistance with their citizenship applications – a process that can be both daunting and intimidating if approached alone.

Tonight, local community associations, faith organizations, civil rights groups, thought leaders, and student activists were welcomed to a special meeting of the Hudson County Central Labor Council, an organization representing and advocating on behalf of union members and local working families.
