The U.S. Mail is Not for Sale, Take Action to Save Middle Class Jobs

There are two things you can do right now to preserve good jobs and protect the safety and security of the U.S. Postal Service: First, you can sign onto this petition opposing the outsourcing of good postal service jobs to Staples. You can also join at the following place and time for a rally to tell Staples that the “U.S. Mail is Not for Sale”

Date:

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Time:

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Place:

Staples at Hamilton Market Place
550 Marketplace Boulevard
Hamilton Township, NJ 08691

Staples and the U.S. Postal Service have cut a deal to locate postal counters in Staples stores. While this idea could generate profits for Staples, save money for the USPS, and provide convenience to consumers, this is far from the whole story. This corporate power grab would reduce accountability to consumers, who would still be paying the same cost for less service; eliminate thousands of middle class jobs; and undermine the integrity of our national mail system by placing the duties of specifically trained long-term postal employees into the hands of less experienced workers with higher turnover as a result of low wages. The average Staples retail employee, working 40 hours a week, makes approximately $18,000 a year.

Staples needs to understand that the ability of workers to earn a basic standard of living is just as important as its ability to make a profit. Together we can stop this postal service outsourcing scheme. Together we will promote good jobs at good wages which are the foundation of a strong economy and thriving communities.
