Earned Sick Days Bill Released from Senate Labor Committee, WFUNJ Partners Provide Crucial Support

This afternoon, our progressive partners joined together during a Senate Labor Committee hearing to make the case that all workers in New Jersey should have the right to accrue paid sick time to use in the case that they or a family member become ill.

Working Families Untied for New Jersey, Inc. joined with its progressive partners this morning to continue the advancement of earned sick days legislation in the state Assembly. Following supportive testimony from workers, small business owners, labor unions, and community stakeholders, the Assembly Budget Committee voted mostly along party lines to release the bill (A-2354) with Republicans voting “no”, Democrats voting “yes” and Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-20) abstaining.

There are approximately 1.2 million workers in our state who are currently denied the ability to take a paid sick day from work. This situation continues to produce harsh and unfair conditions for families and communities. Therefore, we ask all coalition partners to join with us next week to demonstrate our support for a much needed earned sick leave bill (A-2354) being heard by the Assembly Budget Committee.

Star-Ledger Gets It Right With Editorial In Support of Earned Sick Leave
Today, the Star-Ledger – New Jersey’s largest newspaper – published an editorial in support of an earned sick leave law in New Jersey. Such a policy would require that employers allow their workers to earn a limited number of paid sick days to use in case they or their children get sick.

Last night, the Middlesex/Somerset Central Labor Council, hosted the first of many labor/community grassroots meetings, bringing together local leaders and activists from the labor movement and progressive community groups. This event provided an initial opportunity for like-minded progressive organizations to meet with one another and discuss how we can advance our shared policy goals together. Participants were also fortunate to have the opportunity to speak with the many local elected officials in attendance, who we are counting on to carry the message of working families to the State Legislature and their respective governing bodies.
