Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. was proud to march and rally with workers from the Newark Public School System who are fighting for workplace justice, fair contracts, and respect on the job. Workers in the public school system, despite their good-faith bargaining efforts, have not been treated with respect and have instead been met with threats of layoff and shameful union busting tactics.

Charles Hall, Jr., Chair of Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. called for a fair contract and compared the struggle of Newark public school workers with the struggle of working people across the state of New Jersey. He explained that countless workers are undergoing the same exact fight in our state, and that we all have an opportunity to stand up for respect and wage fairness on Election Day, November 5th by voting to support increasing New Jersey’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.25 per hour with a cost of living adjustment.

By voting “Yes” on the minimum wage ballot question, New Jersey voters can enact a permanent solution for all workers who are fighting to take care of their families, but are being undermined by an employer that refuses to take their concerns into account.

Newark public school workers, who are struggling to make ends meet, deserve the opportunity to earn a decent wage and take care of their families. Public school workers are an integral part of the community. We depend on them to ensure our children’s safety at school and provide quality student education. By supporting these workers, we are supporting the local education system as well as members of the community who are our friends and neighbors.
