Turnpike Privatization Not Only a Workers’ Issue, But Also a Community Issue

First we would like thank all of our community partners who have stood in opposition to Turnpike privatization by sending messages to Turnpike Commissioner James Simpson. To date, over 500 messages have been sent. This campaign remains active, so if you have not done so already, please CLICK HERE to take action or share this link with a friend.

Just as we fought for good paying jobs during the “Raise the Wage” campaign, the issue of privatization is no different. Privatization would dramatically undermine the standard of living for hundreds of workers, destabilizing our communities, making it harder for workers to support their families, and increasing reliance on public assistance programs. We realize that in order to grow our economy we need to support those jobs that afford people a decent quality of life.

Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. is proud to support union toll workers on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, and is committed to stopping the drive towards privatization. During a time when we need to focus on preserving and creating good jobs, privatization would accomplish the exact opposite. Additionally, private administration of tolls will undermine accountability and likely increase costs in the long-run as the company seeks to maximize profits at the expense of workers and motorists.

Needless to say, the impact of privatization on our communities is one that we must strongly oppose. Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to continuing our mission of supporting better jobs to build stronger communities.
