National Day of Action: Fight Back against ALEC’s Attacks on Our Communities and Democracy

If you agree that corporate influence on our legislative process and democracy has gone too far, today’s day of action is for you. The American Legislative Exchange Council, better known as ALEC, is a corporate-funded shadow group which manufactures legislation at the federal and state level to attack workers’ rights, gut corporate regulations, disenfranchise voters, weaken environmental protections, undermine public education, and advance the agenda of the extreme right-wing.

ALEC bills are produced by corporate lobbyists and have been introduced into virtually every state legislature in the country, and despite opposition, continue to be signed into law. Some familiar examples include anti-collective bargaining laws in Wisconsin, Right-to-Work in Michigan and Indiana, “stand your ground” in Florida, and various state Voter ID laws.

Today’s national day of action aims to shine a light on the anti-democratic practices of ALEC and to demand that our elected officials put the interests of constituents first. Here are a few ways you can get involved right now.

  • Send a message to your state legislators urging them to stand up to ALEC and put constituents before corporations.
  • Spread the word about ALEC to your friends and family through Facebook and Twitter.
  • Visit www.alecexposed.org to learn all about ALEC’s history, backers, and legislative allies.

The threat of ALEC is unparalleled. This is a group which is trying to highjack our entire democracy to pass legislation that benefits businesses at the expense of our families and communities. The fact that a band of corporate lobbyists is able to override the will of the people shows that our democracy is broken. We need to stand together, educate each other, and demand justice. Thank you for your support.
